How to Spice Up Five Popular Coffee Drinks With Alcohol

When you develop your coffee shop menu, you should consider what to pair your delicious espresso with. Coffee traditionally blends well with different desserts and food. It can also work well with some alcoholic beverages. This is exciting!

Depending on your cafe or coffee business, adding alcohol to your menu may be an excellent way to improve your coffee shop sales. Such coffee beverages can be a part of your core menu or added during seasonal holidays or particular events.

Coffee with alcohol is a great idea to boost your coffee shop revenue. Both coffee and alcohol have high-profit margins, which means that one alcoholic coffee beverage will bring you just as much money (or even more) as two lattes!

Online Barista Training at Barista Training Academy prepares you for real-world barista career advancement and experience.

Note: typically, alcoholic coffee recipes have very low alcohol content. However, if you decide to sell alcohol separately, check with your local licensing agencies. You might need to get an additional permit to sell alcoholic beverages. This information is intended for those who are 21 years of age and older. Always serve alcohol responsibly.

Popular Coffee Drinks With Alcohol

Spice Up Your Coffee Shop Menu With Alcohol

Ah, the drab of the same old menu can haunt any coffee shop.  Perhaps your coffee shop menu needs some fresh ideas! Here are five popular espresso-based drinks that you can use with your favorite spirit or liqueur.

Recipe 1: Irish Coffee

Yum! This is undoubtedly the most popular alcoholic coffee beverage. It can be found on many coffee shop menus or during St. Patrick’s Day and beyond. It is believed that this beverage was first prepared during a cold winter in 1943 by an Irish chef Joe Sheridan, who wanted to keep his customers warm and alert. As many of us know, the drink took on a life of its own!

What you’ll need:

  • Two shots of espresso
  • Hot water
  • Two teaspoons of brown sugar
  • 5 oz of Irish whiskey
  • Whipped cream
  • Ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Warm Irish Coffee glass

Instructions:

  1. Brew a double espresso.
  2. Add brown sugar to the glass.
  3. Pour espresso over the sugar and stir.
  4. Add water.
  5. Pour whiskey and stir.
  6. Add whipped cream on top and serve.

Recipe 2: Espresso Martini (with Kahlúa)

Kahlúa is a coffee liqueur from Mexico. Because it already contains coffee (along with rum and sugar), it makes a perfect addition to most coffee beverages. The first idea that comes to mind when I think about mixing Kahlúa with coffee is Espresso Martini (described below). This recipe was born in 1984 in London when bartender Dick Bradsell invented this sophisticated and robust cocktail requested by a young model.

While this martini is tasty, you can pretty much add Kahlúa to any coffee recipe and have Kahlúa Latte, Kahlúa Americano, Kahlúa Espresso, among others. You can really liven up your coffee shop menu with this one!

What you’ll need:

  • Two shots of espresso
  • 5 oz of vodka
  • 5 oz of Kahlúa
  • Sugar syrup
  • Ice
  • Lemon peel or three coffee beans
  • Cold Martini glass

Instructions:

  1. Brew a double espresso and pour it into a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add all other ingredients into a shaker.
  3. Shake well for at least 10 seconds.
  4. Strain the cocktail into a Martini glass.
  5. Garnish with a lemon peel of 3 coffee beans.

Recipe 3: Mexican-Style Coffee

If you are looking for a hot beverage with Kahlúa liqueur, your best choice may be the one and only – Mexican coffee. It’s called Mexican coffee because next to Kahlúa, we use tequila in this hot – really hot – coffee cocktail. Hello Mexico!

What you’ll need:

  • Two shots of espresso
  • 1 oz of tequila
  • 1 oz of Kahlúa
  • Whipped cream or one scoop of vanilla ice cream (to garnish)
  • Cinnamon or cocoa powder (optional)
  • Irish Coffee glass

Instructions:

  1. Brew a double espresso.
  2. Add tequila and Kahlúa and stir.
  3. Add whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  4. Garnish with cinnamon or cocoa powder.

If you work at a business that serves ice cream too, this would make the perfect adult beverage!

Recipe 4: Kentucky Coffee

Whiskey is an excellent complement to coffee because it often has caramel and vanilla tones, just like coffee. Coffee and whiskey notes create a unique combination that tastes like American South. Make sure you use American whiskey, preferably Kentucky bourbon.

What you’ll need:

  • Two shots of espresso
  • 1 oz of bourbon
  • 5 oz of honey liqueur
  • 5 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • Brown sugar (optional)
  • Whipped cream
  • Irish Coffee glass

Instructions:

  1. Brew a double espresso.
  2. Pour hot coffee, bourbon, liqueur, vanilla into a cup.
  3. Add brown sugar (if needed) and stir well.
  4. Add whipped cream on top and serve.

Recipe 5: Caribbean Coffee

The Caribbean islands are well known for spicy tropical cuisine as well as great rum. In this recipe, amaretto gives the drink its nutty sweetness that goes well with almonds. It’s quite sweet, so you don’t need to use sugar. This delicious coffee drink is easy to make, and it’ll give you an authentic glimpse of the Caribbean.

What you’ll need:

  • Two shots of espresso
  • 5 oz of rum
  • 5 oz of amaretto
  • Whipped cream
  • Shaved almonds (or chocolate powder, cinnamon, caramel, sprinkles)
  • Irish Coffee glass

Instructions:

  1. Pour rum and amaretto into a glass.
  2. Brew a double espresso and add it into a glass.
  3. Add whipped cream and shaved almonds on top.
  4. Instead of almonds, you can use chocolate powder, cinnamon, sprinkles, etc., depending on the season and your imagination.
